Decoding the slow blink, the tail and the 3am zoomies

A tiny cat body language dictionary, for humans who keep misreading the room.

The cat has been communicating clearly this whole time. You just weren't listening.

The slow blink

A slow, relaxed blink is widely seen as a sign of trust and contentment. Try it back: look at your cat softly and blink slowly. If they blink back, congratulations, you've been accepted. Provisionally.

The tail

  • Tail straight up, maybe with a little hook at the tip: a friendly hello.
  • Puffed-up tail: startled or scared. Give space.
  • Thrashing or thumping tail: irritated or overstimulated. That belly is a trap.
  • Tail wrapped around the body: relaxed, or a bit reserved.

The ears

Forward means curious and engaged. Flattened sideways or back means unhappy, scared or about to make a decision you won't like.

The belly

A cat showing its belly usually means "I feel safe", not "please rub here". Proceed at your own risk.

The 3am zoomies

Sudden sprints around the flat are usually just pent-up energy. Cats are naturally most active around dawn and dusk. A good play session in the evening, followed by food, can help shift the chaos to a more civilised hour.

When body language means "see a vet"

Hiding a lot more than usual, a hunched posture, or a sudden change in mood or habits can be signs of pain or illness. Cats are experts at hiding discomfort, so changes are worth taking seriously.

Cat chaos notes are general info, not veterinary advice.
