The litter box math nobody asked for

One cat, two boxes? Yes, really. A short guide to the least glamorous room in your flat.

The cat would like to discuss bathroom facilities. You will listen.

The rule of "one more"

A common guideline from vets and cat behaviour folks is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. One cat, two boxes. Two cats, three boxes. It sounds excessive until you meet a cat who refuses to use a box that someone else used thirty seconds ago.

Location, location, location

  • Quiet, but not a dungeon. Next to a loud washing machine is a bad idea.
  • Not next to food and water. Would you eat in the bathroom? Exactly.
  • Escape routes matter. Cats like to see who's coming, especially in multi-cat homes.

Size and style

Most cats like a box that's roomy, about one and a half times their body length. Hooded boxes keep the mess in but also keep the smell in, which your cat's nose may not appreciate.

Scoop like you mean it

Scooping daily keeps the box usable and helps you notice changes early. A full clean-out every so often keeps things fresh.

When it's not a "behaviour problem"

If your cat suddenly stops using the box, strains, goes very often, or pees outside it, call a vet. Urinary problems can be serious, especially in male cats, and a blocked cat is an emergency. Chaos is fun. Medical chaos is not.
